Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer at New Direction

New Direction  relies heavily on the commitment of our volunteers.  There are several opportunities to serve at New Direction including tutoring, paper grading, transportation and computer networking.  If you would like to volunteer, please fill out our online volunteer application and we will contact you to discuss how you can partner with New Direction.

Paper Grader-  A Paper Grader holds a very important responsibility.  Each week they come by the Resource Center to pick up and drop off student assignments.  There is a huge amount of papers for all subjects that need to be graded.  Paper Graders are usually able to choose which subject they wish to work with.
  • Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week
  • Time requirements: Anytime that the building is open (there is a drop box to utilize if outside of Resource Center hours)
  • Length of commitment: One semester or one school year
  • Location of service: Off center
  • Interaction with students: Minimal
  • Subjects to choose from: English, Math, Science, History--all which have several levels
Tutor/Instructor-  Tutors work 1-2 times per week with a small group of students in a classroom setting.  A specific subject will be the focus with a set of curriculum provided.  There is room for improvements to the curriculum with the approval of the Program Director within scholastic parameters.  Assignments will be given by the tutor and graded by the Paper Graders unless necessary for the tutor to grade.  Tutors will be responsible to assess the student's class interaction each meeting time.  This is done on a scale of 1-10 and is a part of the students grade.
  • Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week, 1 hr each class (1-2x weekly)
  • Time requirements: During Study Group hours and occassional volunteer training meetings
  • Length of commitment: One semester or one school year
  • Subjects: Core-English, Math, Science, History Computer Non-Core-Gym, Health, Electives (several types)
  • Interaction with students: Often
  • Location of service: Anchorage City Church Campus

Driver/Student Transportation-This is an ongoing need for our students and is a great opportunity to mentor students during morning or afternoon drive time.
