Frequently Asked Questions

What is the New Direction Study Group/High School Completion Program?
Our program is a structured tutoring program which offers students time to study and complete work during the day in between tutoring blocks.  Students must attend the entire day in order to access tutoring services.

Is New Direction an actual school?
New Direction is not an actual school.  New Direction operates as a tutoring center offering teacher supported courses.  Students receive high school credit through an accredited school district.

Do students earn a state certified diploma?
Yes.  Students choose a state certified home school program which accepts the New Direction Resource Center’s services.  Upon fulfillment of the school district credit requirements, the student is issued a State of Alaska Diploma from that school district.

What are the hours?
The academic day begins at 8:30 am and students are released between noon and 1:45 depending on their individual class load.

Does New Direction follow the Anchorage School District Calendar?
New Direction takes the Anchorage School  District calendar into consideration but does not follow it explicitly.

Does it cost anything to enroll?
There is no cost to the student to access our services.  The only cost that the students may incur is in specific classes with fees or the bus services for transportation to and from school. Summer instructional tutoring does have a nominal fee per credit.

Who teaches the classes?
We utilize members of the community who are professionals, paraprofessionals or experts in their field.  We have had the privilege to have had doctors, teachers, engineers, mechanics, college students, and many other qualified instructors.

How do I enroll?
There is a link above labeled, “Apply Online”.  This lines out the process and has the “Intent to Enroll Application”.  Prospective Students will be scheduled for an interview with the Program Director.  There is an extensive application process so be sure to get your intent to apply form in early.  There is a limited amount of space available and not all applicants are accepted.

Can I come and visit the classroom?
All prospective students and their parents are more than welcome to visit the classroom at any time.  Simply contact the office and set up an appointment.
